Cool facts
Tallest in Africa. Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain on the entire African continent, soaring 19,341 feet (5,895 meters) above sea level. No other peak in Africa comes close to its impressive height.
A sleeping giant. Kilimanjaro is a dormant volcano, which means it's not erupting now but it did in the past. Scientists say it might wake up again someday, but don't worry, it's been quiet for quite a while.
Stands alone tall. It's the world's tallest free-standing mountain, meaning it rises all by itself without being part of a mountain range. Its massive base sits on a plateau, making it even more remarkable from below.
Snow at the top. Even though Kilimanjaro is in hot Tanzania near the equator, the peak stays frozen with snow and ice because it's so incredibly high that the air is frigid up there.
Super prominent peak. Kilimanjaro is the fourth most prominent peak on Earth, meaning it stands out dramatically from the land around it more than almost any other mountain in the world.
