Built by tiny polyps. The Great Barrier Reef is made of billions of microscopic coral polyps that work together to create this massive underwater structure. It's the biggest single thing ever built by living organisms!
Visible from space. The reef is so enormous that astronauts can see it from outer space! It stretches over 2,300 kilometres along the coast of Queensland, Australia, covering an area as big as many countries.
Home to 2,900 reefs. The Great Barrier Reef isn't just one reef, it's made up of over 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands all working together as one giant system.
Teems with life. Thousands of different fish species, sea turtles, dolphins, and other ocean creatures call the reef home, making it one of the most diverse habitats on Earth.
A world treasure. The reef was named a World Heritage Site in 1981 because it's so special and important to protect for future generations to enjoy.
