Invisible field. Every magnet creates a magnetic field around it that you can't see, but it's what does all the pulling and pushing.
Loves certain metals. Magnets attract materials like iron, steel, nickel, and cobalt, but they don't grab everything metal, such as aluminum.
Push and pull. Magnets have two poles, north and south. Opposite poles attract each other, but two of the same pole push apart.
Earth is a magnet. Our whole planet acts like a giant magnet, which is why a compass needle always swings to point north.
