Ancient Indigenous game. Lacrosse was created by Indigenous peoples of North America as early as the 12th century, making it the oldest organized sport on the continent. It was much more than just a game, it was important to their culture and communities.
Originally very rough. The original version of lacrosse was extremely physical and intense, with hundreds of players sometimes competing at once. European colonists who arrived in North America watched the game and decided to change the rules to make it much safer.
Stick and ball sport. Players use a special curved stick called a lacrosse stick to catch, carry, and throw a small rubber ball. The goal is to throw the ball into the opposing team's net to score points.
Modern sport today. Today, lacrosse is played in colleges and professional leagues all across North America. The modern version keeps the fast action and skill of the original game while being much safer for players.
