Gold discovered. On August 16, 1896, local miners found gold in the Klondike region of Yukon, Canada. When news reached Seattle and San Francisco the next year, thousands of people rushed north hoping to strike it rich.
Massive migration. About 100,000 prospectors stampeded to the Klondike between 1896 and 1898, making it one of history's most dramatic gold rushes. Most of these adventurers faced harsh conditions in the frozen wilderness.
Few got wealthy. While some prospectors did become wealthy from finding gold, the vast majority went home empty-handed. The journey was expensive and dangerous, and finding gold was incredibly difficult.
Famous in stories. The Klondike Gold Rush became so famous that it inspired countless films, books, and photographs. People are still fascinated by stories of the brave (or desperate) prospectors who chased their dreams in the frozen north.
