Sticks and pucks. Players use sticks to control and shoot a hard rubber puck called a vulcanized puck into the other team's net. Each goal scored is worth one point.
Three periods. A game lasts about an hour, split into three 20-minute periods. The team with the most points at the end wins.
Six on the ice. Each team usually has six players on the ice at once, including a goaltender who guards the net.
Overtime tiebreaker. If the score is tied at the end, the game goes to overtime or a shootout to decide the winner.
Tough and fast. Ice hockey is a full-contact game and one of the most physically demanding team sports there is.
