Cool facts
Contamination comes in three types. Food can get contaminated by harmful germs (biological), chemicals like pesticides, or physical things like glass or metal. Any of these can make food unsafe to eat.
Safety starts at the farm. Food safety includes checking where food comes from, how it's grown or raised, what additives and pesticides are used, and proper labeling. These steps keep harmful things out of food before it even reaches stores.
Safety continues at home. Once food gets to the market and your kitchen, it's your job to keep it safe by storing it properly, cooking it to the right temperature, and keeping your hands and surfaces clean. This stops germs from multiplying and making you sick.
Outbreaks happen when many people get sick. When two or more people get the same illness from eating the same contaminated food, it's called a food-borne disease outbreak. Scientists track these to figure out what went wrong and how to prevent it.
Industry and government work together. Governments have inspection and certification systems to make sure food is safe from farms all the way to stores. This protects everyone from getting sick from contaminated food.
