Fairy Forts

Homes long ago. Fairy forts were circular dwellings built in Ireland from the late Iron Age through early Christian times. People constructed them with earth banks, ditches, wooden walls, and wooden buildings inside.

Mysterious remains. Most of these ancient homes didn't last long, so today only faint circular marks and rings remain in the Irish landscape. Grass and plants grew over them, making them look mysterious.

Folklore protects them. Local Irish people created stories about fairies living in and guarding these ancient sites. These magical tales kept farmers and builders from destroying the ruins, which actually helped preserve them for us to study today.

Nature's clues. The circles of vegetation and earth that remain show exactly where these Iron Age people lived thousands of years ago. Archaeologists use these patterns to learn how ancient Irish communities built their homes.
