Cool facts
Picture puzzles combined. Egyptian hieroglyphs weren't just pictures; they mixed images that represented whole words, individual sounds, and even syllables all together. This made them super flexible for writing anything from names to stories.
More than 1,000 symbols. Ancient Egyptians created over 1,000 different hieroglyphic characters to write their language. They used different versions, like fancy hieroglyphs for religious texts and a faster cursive style called hieratic for everyday writing.
Ancestors of our ABC's. Egyptian hieroglyphs were the great-great-grandparents of almost every alphabet we use today. They inspired the Phoenician alphabet, which led to Greek, Latin, Arabic, and many other writing systems around the world.
One of four originals. Egyptians developed hieroglyphic writing completely on their own, without copying anyone else. Only three other writing systems in history were invented the same way: cuneiform, Chinese characters, and Mayan script.
Evolved into new scripts. As Egyptian writing changed over time, hieroglyphics transformed into hieratic and demotic scripts, which were faster and easier to write. These were like the ancestors of modern cursive handwriting.
