Cool facts
Long and lanky. Diplodocus was one of the longest dinosaurs, with a whip-like tail and a very long neck that helped it reach plants.
Double beam name. Its name means 'double beam' in Greek, referring to special bones under its tail that were once thought to be one of a kind.
Discovered long ago. The first Diplodocus fossils were found in 1877, and the dinosaur was officially named by Othniel Charles Marsh in 1878.
Jurassic giant. It lived in North America during the Late Jurassic, a time long before flowers and grasses covered the land.
