Ancient invention. Paper lanterns were invented in China over 2,000 years ago and were originally used to light homes before electric lights existed. People would place candles inside to create a warm, soft glow.
Simple construction. The most basic paper lantern is just a colored paper bag with a candle inside, but fancier ones have bamboo or metal hoops holding the paper in different shapes like cubes, spheres, or cylinders.
Festival favorite. Today, paper lanterns are popular decorations at festivals and celebrations, especially during the Lunar New Year when families release sky lanterns into the air as a tradition.
Many styles. Paper lanterns come in countless colors, sizes, and designs, from simple traditional shapes to elaborate creations that look like animals, plants, or buildings.
Still used today. Even though we have electric lights now, paper lanterns remain popular decorations for parties, weddings, and outdoor events because they create a magical, festive atmosphere.
