Cool facts
Living light show. Bioluminescence is when animals and plants create light from a chemical reaction happening inside their bodies, kind of like a natural glow stick. It's completely different from the light that bounces off things, this light is actually made by the living thing itself.
Sea creatures glow. Lots of ocean animals make their own light, including fish, jellyfish, and tiny creatures you can barely see. Some of them use glowing bacteria that live inside their bodies as helpful roommates, while others make the light all by themselves.
Fireflies light up. Those magical blinking bugs you see on summer nights are fireflies, and they're one of the most famous bioluminescent animals on land. They use their glow to talk to each other and find mates in the dark.
Evolved many times. This amazing ability didn't come from one ancestor, evolution created glowing powers at least 94 different times across many different species! The very first glowing creatures were octocorals in the ocean about 540 million years ago.
Even fungi glow. It's not just animals, some mushrooms and bacteria can glow too, making the forest floor or ocean water shimmer with an eerie blue-green light on special nights.
