Cool facts
Buried in ice. Almost all of Antarctica is covered by a giant ice sheet that's about 1.9 km (1.2 miles) thick on average. That's a LOT of ice!
Super big. It's the fifth-largest continent, about 40% bigger than all of Europe, covering around 14.2 million square kilometers.
Bottom of the world. Antarctica holds the geographic South Pole and sits almost entirely below the Antarctic Circle.
Ringed by ocean. The Southern Ocean wraps all the way around the continent, surrounding it with cold water.
Hardly any people. It's Earth's least-populated continent, with no permanent residents, mostly just scientists visiting research stations.
