Cool facts
Built in the 1800s. Neuschwanstein Castle was constructed in the 19th century on a rugged hill in the Bavarian Alps, near the border between Germany and Austria. It was designed to look like a fairy-tale castle with towers and dramatic stonework.
Incredibly tall structure. At 65 metres high, Neuschwanstein holds the Guinness World Record as the tallest castle in the world. That's about as tall as a 20-story building!
Mountain gorge location. The castle sits on a hilltop above a narrow gorge carved by the PΓΆllat stream, surrounded by beautiful Alpine scenery with lakes and forests nearby. The landscape makes it feel like a true storybook setting.
King Ludwig's dream. The palace was built for King Ludwig II of Bavaria as part of his vision to create magnificent palaces inspired by history and legend. It became so famous that Disney and other filmmakers used it as inspiration for fictional castles.
UNESCO World Heritage Site. Since 2025, Neuschwanstein Castle has been recognized as part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site along with three other palaces built by King Ludwig II.
