Europe's First Civilization. The Minoan civilization arose on Crete and became the first advanced civilization in all of Europe. This means Crete was where Europeans first built cities, developed writing, and created complex societies thousands of years ago.

Very Ancient Roots. People lived on Crete as far back as 7000 BC, which was more than 4,000 years before the famous Minoan civilization even began. These early settlers were some of the first people to make a permanent home on this Mediterranean island.

Island Location. Being surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea made Crete a perfect place for a civilization to grow and trade with other groups. The island's position allowed the Minoans to become skilled sailors and traders who connected with Egypt and the Middle East.

Advanced Culture. The Minoans created beautiful pottery, intricate palaces, and a unique form of writing called Linear A. Archaeologists have discovered amazing artwork and buildings that show how sophisticated and artistic these ancient people were.
