The Alhambra

A Palace Fortress. The Alhambra is both a grand palace and a defensive fortress built high in the hills of Granada, Spain. It was built starting in the 13th century by Islamic rulers who wanted a place that was beautiful, strong, and hard to attack.

Incredible Art Everywhere. Almost every surface of the Alhambra is covered with stunning geometric patterns, carved plaster, and colorful tiles. The Islamic builders believed that showing too many animal or human figures in art was against their religion, so they created amazing designs with shapes instead.

Water and Gardens. The palace has beautiful courtyards with fountains, pools, and flowing water everywhere you look. The builders were experts at bringing water from mountains nearby and using it to cool the buildings and create peaceful gardens.

Preserved Through History. The Alhambra is the only well-preserved palace left from the medieval Islamic world, making it incredibly special to historians and visitors. It survived earthquakes, wars, and the passage of time to teach us about how people lived and created art hundreds of years ago.

Two Styles Mixed. While the Alhambra is famous for its Islamic architecture, it also has beautiful examples of Spanish Renaissance art and design. This shows how different cultures influenced and inspired each other during this time period in history.
