A gift from France. The people of France gave this huge statue to the United States as a symbol of friendship and freedom.
Two famous makers. French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi designed the statue, and Gustave Eiffel built the metal framework that holds it up.
Why she's green. The statue is covered in copper, which slowly turned a greenish color over time as the metal reacted with the air.
Robed and crowned. She's a giant woman wearing flowing robes and a spiky crown, standing on Liberty Island in New York Harbor.
Big birthday. The Statue of Liberty was officially dedicated on October 28, 1886.
