Massive indoor marketplace. A shopping mall is one giant building that houses dozens or even hundreds of stores all under one roof, so you can shop no matter what the weather is outside.
Department store anchors. The biggest stores in a mall, called anchor stores, are usually department stores that sell clothing, furniture, and more, they're like the 'bookends' that hold the whole mall together.
Modern version of streets. The word 'mall' used to mean a long walkway with shops on the sides, kind of like a outdoor shopping street, but in the late 1960s it became the name for these giant enclosed buildings.
Called different names worldwide. In the United Kingdom and many other countries around the world, people call them 'shopping centres' instead of shopping malls, even though they're basically the same thing.
