Born in England. Rugby football developed in the 1800s in England and got its name from Rugby School, where the game took shape.

Two big versions. Over time, rugby split into two separate sports: rugby union and rugby league, each with its own rules.

An oval ball. Instead of a round ball, rugby uses an egg-shaped ball that players carry, kick, and pass to teammates.

Backwards passing. In rugby, you can only pass the ball sideways or backwards to a teammate, never forwards!

Team effort. Rugby is a contact sport where teamwork, strength, and quick thinking all help carry the ball toward the goal.
