Cool facts
Speedy mail service. The Pony Express delivered letters on horseback across nearly 2,000 miles between Missouri and California. Riders worked in relays, switching to fresh horses at stations so the mail could travel day and night.
Lightning-fast delivery. A single piece of mail could travel from Missouri to California in just 10 days, incredibly fast for the 1860s! Without the Pony Express, letters took weeks or months to arrive.
Young, brave riders. The company hired skinny, lightweight young men and boys as riders because they were faster on horseback. These daring riders faced wild terrain, bad weather, and Native American conflicts to deliver the mail.
Short but famous. The Pony Express only operated for about 18 months, from 1860 to 1861. It became legendary even though it didn't last long, and it went out of business when the telegraph made instant long-distance communication possible.
Expensive to use. Sending a letter by Pony Express cost a lot of money, five dollars for a half-ounce letter! Only wealthy people and important businesses could usually afford it.
