Doctors who care for kids. A pediatrician is a doctor who specializes in treating babies, toddlers, children, and teenagers. The word pediatrics comes from two ancient Greek words that together mean 'healer of children.'
Where pediatricians work. Pediatricians practice in many places like clinics, hospitals, research centers, and universities. Some work in general hospitals while others work in hospitals made just for children.
Different age limits around the world. In most countries, pediatric care covers patients up to age 18, but in the United States, doctors recommend pediatric care through age 21. Some specialists even care for young adults up to age 26, depending on insurance.
Specialized pediatric experts. Beyond general pediatrics, some doctors become pediatric subspecialists who focus on specific areas like heart problems, brain and nervous system issues, or children's surgeries.
