Singers are the stars. In opera, the main characters sing their lines instead of speaking them. The singers have to be great actors too, because they need to show emotions and tell the story while they sing.
A composer writes it. An opera is created by two artists working together: a composer who writes all the music, and a librettist who writes the words and story that the singers perform.
Big orchestras play along. A whole orchestra sits in front of the stage playing instruments like violins, flutes, and drums to support the singers and create the mood of the story.
Special theatre buildings. Operas are usually performed in grand opera houses with beautiful decorations, fancy costumes, and painted scenery that makes you feel like you're watching something truly special.
