First on the Moon. On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong stepped onto the Moon's surface and became the first human ever to walk there. His famous words were, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."
Brave test pilot. Before becoming an astronaut, Armstrong was a skilled naval aviator and test pilot who flew experimental aircraft to see how fast and high they could go. This dangerous work taught him how to handle tricky situations.
Engineer and teacher. Armstrong wasn't just a pilot, he had training as an aeronautical engineer and later became a university professor, sharing his knowledge with students about flight and space.
Calm under pressure. During the Apollo 11 landing, Armstrong had to manually steer the spacecraft to find a safe spot to land, with only seconds of fuel remaining. His cool thinking saved the mission.
