Ancient giant. Megalodon swam the oceans from about 23 to 3.58 million years ago, during the Miocene and early Pliocene times.
Super sized. Its name means 'big tooth,' and this mackerel shark was far larger than any shark alive today.
Not a great white. Scientists once thought it was a close cousin of the great white shark, but it actually belongs to its own extinct family called Otodontidae.
Long gone. Megalodon went extinct around 3.58 million years ago, so no human has ever seen one alive.
