Network of networks. The Internet connects millions of separate computer networks, from schools to governments to businesses, into one huge global system.

Speaks a special language. Devices talk to each other using rules called TCP/IP, kind of like a shared language that lets any computer understand another.

The Web is not the Internet. The World Wide Web, all those linked web pages, is just one of many things that ride on the Internet, along with email and video streaming.

Wires, light, and waves. Information zips around through electronic cables, beams of light in fiber optics, and wireless signals.

So many uses. The Internet carries email, chat groups, phone calls, streaming movies and music, and file sharing all at once.
