Elephants over mountains. Hannibal famously led his army, including war elephants, across the snowy Alps to surprise Rome. It was one of the boldest military journeys in history.

Rome's great rival. He commanded Carthage's forces against the Roman Republic during the Second Punic War, becoming one of Rome's most feared enemies.

A famous promise. As a boy, Hannibal pledged to his father that he would 'never be a friend of Rome.' He kept that promise his whole life.

Mediterranean tensions. He lived when Rome was rising as a great power, having beaten Carthage in the First Punic War, leaving Carthage eager for revenge.
