Cool facts
Made from fresh leaves. Green tea comes from the Camellia sinensis plant, the same plant that makes black tea and oolong tea. The difference is that green tea leaves are not oxidized, which means they don't sit and darken the way other tea leaves do.
Started in China. Green tea originated in China during the late 1st millennium BC, which means it's been around for over 2,000 years. It became so popular that its production spread to other countries in East Asia.
Bright green color. Because the leaves haven't oxidized, green tea stays fresh and green, unlike black tea which turns dark brown. This also gives green tea a lighter, more delicate taste.
Spread across Asia. Over time, people in many East Asian countries learned how to grow and make green tea. Today it's produced in places like Japan, Korea, and Vietnam as well as China.
