Cool facts
Dance on Ice. Figure skaters perform amazing jumps, spins, and dance moves while gliding on ice wearing special figure skates. It takes years of practice to make it look so smooth and beautiful.
Olympic Pioneers. Figure skating was the first winter sport ever included in the Olympic Games, starting way back in 1908 in London. That makes it one of the oldest winter Olympic sports!
Many Ways to Compete. Skaters can perform alone (singles), with a partner (pairs), or in ice dance where partners move together like a choreographed routine. In 2014, teams of skaters even started competing together in the Olympics.
Difficult Moves. Advanced figure skaters perform incredible elements like death spirals (where a partner spins while holding another), throw jumps, lifts, and complex spins. Each move requires strength, balance, and tons of practice.
