Layers and frosting. Birthday cakes are usually made with multiple layers stacked together and covered in colorful frosting. The frosting often has the birthday person's name and a special message written on it.

Candles and wishes. Tiny lit candles are placed on top of the cake, and the birthday person makes a secret wish before blowing them all out in one breath. People believe that if you blow out all the candles, your wish will come true!

The singing tradition. When it's time to eat the cake, everyone gathers around and sings "Happy Birthday to You" together. This song is one of the most popular songs in the world.

Many fun shapes. Birthday cakes don't always have to be big round or square cakes, they can also be cupcakes, cake pops (little balls on sticks), or other creative shapes and sizes.

Celebrated worldwide. Almost every culture around the world has its own birthday cake tradition, even though the style and flavors might be different from place to place.
