Cool facts
Celebrates three moments. Vesak honors three huge events in Buddha's life all on one day: his birth, his enlightenment (when he understood the meaning of life), and his death. Different Buddhist traditions celebrate these events with joy and reflection.
Celebrated across Asia. Buddhists in South Asia, Southeast Asia, Tibet, and Mongolia all observe Vesak, making it one of the most important festivals in the Buddhist world. Millions of people participate in celebrations together.
Full moon festival. Vesak is celebrated on the full moon day, which is why it's also called Buddha Purnima (purnima means full moon). The exact date changes each year depending on the lunar calendar.
Also called Buddha Day. This festival has many names, Vesak, Buddha Jayanti, Buddha Purnima, and Visak Bochea, but they all mean the same celebration of Buddha's life and teachings across different cultures.
Special traditions. During Vesak, Buddhists often visit temples, light lanterns, decorate with flowers, meditate, and remember Buddha's wisdom and kindness.
