Started in 1923. Two brothers named Walt and Roy Disney founded Disney as a small animation studio over 100 years ago. It began with just a few animators and grew into one of the biggest entertainment companies in the world.

Mickey Mouse's debut. In 1928, Disney released a short film called Steamboat Willie that featured Mickey Mouse and was the first cartoon with synchronized sound (sound that matched the characters' movements). Mickey Mouse became so popular that he's still Disney's mascot today.

Animation pioneers. Disney revolutionized animation by being the first to use post-produced sound in cartoons, which means they added the sound after filming instead of during. This innovation changed the entire animation industry forever.

Huge entertainment empire. Today, Disney is headquartered in Burbank, California, and is a multinational company that makes movies, TV shows, theme parks, and creates entertainment loved by people all around the world.
