Spiral ramp. A screw is really a ramp wrapped around a pole. Those spiral ridges are called threads, and they grip whatever you screw into.
Turning means power. When you twist a screw, your turning force, called torque, pulls it deep into the material to hold things tightly.
Makes its own path. Some screws can carve their own threads as they go, so you don't always need a hole ready first.
