Barely any rain. A desert is a place where very little precipitation falls, which makes it tough for plants and animals to live there.
A third of land. About one-third of all the land on Earth is arid or semi-arid, meaning deserts cover way more of the planet than you might think.
Cold deserts exist. Not all deserts are hot and sandy! The polar regions get so little precipitation they're sometimes called 'cold deserts.'
Bare ground. With so few plants to protect it, the desert surface gets worn away by wind and weather over time.
